IAU WGSN – catalogs

Name Catalogs

The origin of the WG is the wish for exoplanet names.

Over the course of the years, we accumulated several catalogs with which we are working.

Star Names

The IAU-Catalog of Star Names (CSN) is a list of names standardized for the use for specific stars. It provides brief etymologies/ origins and references for these names: this catalog is a living document; we continuously add to it! (our page allows export in different formats)

Exoplanet Names

The IAU-Catalog of Exoplanet Names (CEN) is a list of given names of explanets, typically in combination with naming their host star. They originate from NameExoWorld Campaigns (NEWCs). This catalog is downloadable as CSV and PDF.

Star Catalogs

Around 2020, IAU/ WGSN decided to use traditional names for the stars brighter than V=6.5 mag and invent new names only for fainter stars. Therefore, WGSN created an own catalog of naked eye objects to work with.

WGSN-Catalog is the combination of these two:

NEC

Naked Eye star Catalog (NEC) was supposed to be a star catalog but it is necessary to include all objects brighter than 6.5 mag, even if they are clusters or galaxies, as these objects have been visible and would have been registered as “fuzzy stars” by historical observers, i.e. before the 20th century (CSV, PDF).

WGSN-Faints

WGSN-Faints, thus, is a catalog that adds the stars that are fainter than 6.5 mag but have been named by the IAU already, e.g. in NEWCs (CSV, PDF).
